After watching Maria Zenovich’s terrific documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired this week I found myself trawling through Polanksi posters. What’s surprising about the stunning poster for Rosemary’s Baby is that Polanski’s name is barely visible, smaller than producer William Castle’s, smaller even than Ralph Bellamy’s. When I design movie posters myself I’m often asked, not unreasonably, to make type bigger, whether it’s titles or pull-quotes or awards. I always try to argue that less is more; I should keep a copy of this by my desk.
